About the data

Every number comes from public U.S. government data and a CC BY dataset from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Nothing is estimated by hand.

Average price

A utility’s average residential price is its residential revenue divided by the kilowatt-hours it sold to homes, from Form EIA-861 (2024, all ~3,000 U.S. utilities). Fixed monthly charges, taxes and fuel adjustments that the utility reports as revenue are included, so this is close to what homes really paid per kWh on average — but it is not a tariff. Small utilities file the short form EIA-861S with totals only; for them the price covers all customer types.

Fresh monthly prices

Form EIA-861M gives monthly revenue and sales for larger utilities and state totals. We show the latest month (August 2026, preliminary) for states and for utilities that report monthly, and the trend since 2010 for states.

Which utility serves a ZIP code

First NREL’s “U.S. Electric Utility Companies and Rates: Look-up by Zip Code (2024)” (CC BY 4.0); then every utility that EIA’s service-territory list places in the ZIP code’s county. County matches can cover only part of a ZIP code, and the page labels them.

Retail choice

We flag states where more than 10% of residential customers buy from independent energy suppliers in EIA data, plus Texas (ERCOT), where retail providers sell bundled service.

Who built this

Electricity Rate Map is designed, built and run by Digital Dynamics Kft., a small European software studio (Hungary, EU). We wrote the data pipelines, the map engine and the site, and we host them on our own servers in the European Union. We also run Tornado Live Map, Earthquake Live Map, Planting Zone Map and Home Hazard Map.

The same team builds custom software for businesses: online shops and websites, SaaS products, ERP and back-office systems, mobile apps for Android and iPhone, and data collection, automation and map-based dashboards — or anything else that can be programmed. Projects are delivered turnkey, with a 12-month bug-fix warranty and EU GDPR compliance.

Averages, not a quote. Prices here are what each utility’s residential customers paid on average (revenue ÷ kWh sold, fixed charges included), as reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Your own rate depends on your plan, season and usage — check your bill or your utility’s tariff.
